The best things to do in Johor Bahru — theme parks, the food scene, shopping outlets, the waterfront and old town — for residents and Singapore day-trippers alike.

Things to Do in Johor Bahru: A Local's Guide

For a long time Johor Bahru was the place Singaporeans drove through to fill the tank and grab cheaper groceries. That’s changed. JB now has theme parks, a serious food scene, big outlet malls and a tidied-up waterfront — enough to fill a proper weekend, never mind a day trip. This guide is for two kinds of reader: people who’ve moved here and want to actually enjoy the place, and Singaporeans crossing over for the day who want more than petrol and a buffet.

A practical note for day-trippers: weekends and public holidays are busy, and the crossing can swallow an hour or more. Build that into your plan. We cover this in our Crossing the JB–Singapore border guide (coming soon).

Theme parks and family days out

JB is unusually well stocked with theme parks for a city its size, which makes it a strong pick for families.

  • Legoland Malaysia (Iskandar Puteri) — the big one. A full theme park plus a water park and an indoor attraction, built for younger kids more than thrill-seekers.
  • Sanrio Hello Kitty Town / the indoor attractions at Puteri Harbour — character-themed indoor fun, good as a rain-day backup.
  • Water parks — JB has a few large ones; handy in the heat, but go early before the crowds.

If you’re here for the day from Singapore, pick one park and commit — trying to squeeze two in plus the border crossing usually ends in a tired, grumpy car.

The food scene — JB’s real draw

If you ask me what JB does best, it’s food. This is a genuine food city, and eating well here costs a fraction of what it does across the causeway.

Kopitiam and old-town hawker

The old town around Jalan Tan Hiong Siew and the surrounding streets is the heart of it — traditional kopitiam, kaya toast, local coffee, and breakfast that’s been done the same way for decades.

Mount Austin

Mount Austin is JB’s modern food belt: cafés, dessert spots, supper places, Korean and Japanese, plus the bak kut teh and seafood the area is known for. It’s where a lot of locals actually go to eat.

Markets and night markets

The pasar malam (night markets) rotate through different neighbourhoods on set evenings — street food, fruit, cheap eats. Worth timing a visit around one.

Shopping and outlets

Shopping is the classic Singapore day-trip reason, and JB delivers on it.

  • Johor Premium Outlets (JPO) — branded fashion and sportswear at outlet prices, just off the highway towards Kulai. The day-tripper favourite.
  • Major malls in the city — large shopping centres near the checkpoints, convenient if you’re crossing on foot or by bus and don’t want to drive far.
  • Local markets for produce, dried goods and household basics at prices that are the whole reason many Singaporeans come over.

The waterfront — Danga Bay and Puteri Harbour

JB’s waterfront has had real money put into it.

  • Danga Bay — a long stretch of waterfront with eateries, open space and a relaxed evening crowd. Good for a stroll and a meal without a plan.
  • Puteri Harbour (Iskandar Puteri) — a marina-side development with restaurants and the family attractions mentioned above; a more polished, planned feel.

Both are easy, low-effort outings — the kind of place to end a day rather than build one around.

Culture and the old town

The old town is where JB’s history actually lives, and it rewards walking rather than driving.

  • The heritage streets around the old town — shophouses, temples, a mosque, and the layered Malay-Chinese-Indian mix that defines the city.
  • Street art and cafés tucked into restored shophouses — JB has quietly built a small but real café and mural scene here.

Easy nature and day trips nearby

When you want out of the city, you don’t have to go far.

  • Coastal and kampung drives within an hour or two of JB — seafood villages and quieter beaches.
  • Hill and nature spots on the outskirts for an easy morning walk before it gets hot.
  • Desaru, further east, for a proper beach day — better as an overnight than a rushed day trip.

Planning your visit

A few honest pointers:

  • Drive if you can. JB is car-dependent and attractions are spread out; relying on walking or buses limits you a lot. If you’ve just moved here, our relocation guide covers why a car is close to essential.
  • Avoid peak crossing times if you’re coming from Singapore — early out, early back beats sitting in causeway traffic.
  • Pace it. One theme park or one shopping run, plus a good meal, makes a better day than a packed checklist.

If you’ve recently moved to JB and want to settle in properly, start with our relocation guide. And if you’ve got a specific question — a neighbourhood, a day-trip plan, where to eat — get in touch. We answer real questions from real people who spend time here.
